Kopan
Nov 2019 - Dec 2019
This collection was created during a seven week stay at Kopan Monastery in Kathmandu, Nepal. The works are influenced by the concepts explored over a month-long course on Tibetan Buddhism and the following week-long retreat there.
Note from the Artist:
In recent times, the Black Lives Matter movement has shifted to the forefront of public attention in the United States. Although I am living in Nepal, social media, friends, and family have kept me informed about the events occurring: protests, riots, cries for major change.
I felt at a loss for what I could do. I became overwhelmed with the anger, sadness, and fear present on social media, in the news, from my loved ones, and in my own mind and heart. So, I took to the sketchpad. And I drew. It started with an eye, the witness to everything, and expanded out from there. Through this piece, I found my hope. I found what I dream can come from this uproar: reform, growth, awareness, and drastic movement toward equality.
Everyone has something they can do to fight for what they believe in. My "something" is art. I made a piece that expresses what I hope will come, and what I currently see is coming, from the Black Lives Matter movement.
